The saying, “you are what you eat,” is more accurate than you might think. Many studies have demonstrated a direct link between poor or inadequate nutrition and serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, hormone imbalances, and obesity. Not eating the right foods can even affect your sleep habits and cause daytime drowsiness and problems focusing. Today’s hectic lifestyles and the easy availability of fast food and prepackaged “convenience” foods have made it easier than ever to develop poor eating habits, increasing the risks of these medical problems.
Sometimes called nutritional counseling, nutritional coaching is a customized program focused on the relationship between diet and health, helping patients to understand their nutritional needs so they can make informed decisions about the foods that they consume. The goal of nutritional coaching is to help each patient optimize their health and wellness so that they can prevent serious diseases and improve the way their body functions at every age.
Nutritional coaching begins with a physical evaluation and testing to help identify nutritional deficiencies and other factors, including lifestyle issues, that can be used to tailor the coaching program to the patient’s specific needs and health objectives. Patients will be asked detailed questions about their eating habits, their physical activity, and even issues like their work habits and stress levels that could be contributing to poor eating habits and related issues like weight gain. Once the nutritional program has been developed, patients will visit the office on a routine basis so their health and progress can be evaluated, providing an opportunity for the program to be adjusted as needed to help the patient stay on track.
